The winners of the Red Ribbon Week bulletin board contest were awarded last week: Mrs. Keyes and Ms. Mackey’s third grade class won First Place, with Ms. Waleko’s second grade class came in second place and Mrs. Furey’s class came in third. Congratulations! Third grade teacher Mrs. Branche hosted the annual Veterans’ Day Spirit Meet Monday morning. Retired and current soldiers were honored with a heartwarming ceremony thanking them for their service. Veterans were invited back to a breakfast in Mrs. Branche’s room where they enjoyed learning about her students and life in third grade! The school is collecting leftover Halloween candy so they can ship it to soldiers and children overseas. Students are encouraged to bring in their candy donations and drop it off in the front lobby or give to your classroom teacher this week. The candy buy-back is sponsored by Bach and Grazina Orthodontics. Junior high students enjoyed a Halloween dance last Friday night. The theme was “Day of the Dead” and students enjoyed dancing, pizza, and a costume contest. Mrs. Frazier’s fifth grade class recently did a fun science activity with play dough. Students made topographical maps which included making mountains and hills with play dough indicating different slopes. The activity helped reinforce map features, including reading contour lines.

Springs School is celebrating the fall season with a variety of seasonal activities: The art department is having each class make scarecrows that they will place around Springs. Be on the lookout for them! The annual Halloween parade for grades pre-k through fifth will be held on Halloween at 2:15. Parents and community members are invited to view the parade in the front of the school, but please take note that parents will not be allowed in the building this year, nor will any parent be able to take their child home right after the parade. Junior High students are celebrating Halloween with their own tradition: an “idiom contest.” Students in grades sixth through eighth choose an idiom to dress up as and then the top three costumes are chosen during the contest. In honor of National Bullying Prevention Month, some of the school’s “Diversity Ambassadors” in seventh and eighth grade shared a book called “The Fight of the Crayons” with classes. After reading, Ambassadors led a discussion on the themes of diversity, tolerance, and teamwork. Students were then given copies of the book that they could color and take home. Two athletes achieved major accomplishments recently: James Bradley qualified for the Varsity County Golf Tournament, and Brayan Rivera ran the 1.5 mile course at the Sunken Meadow MS Invitational and finished first out of over 500 middle school male athletes! The third grade had their first “room transformation” of the year. Teachers transformed their classrooms into a football theme where students were “drafted” onto teams and practiced skills in math, reading, writing, and grammar. At the end of the day, students celebrated with football-themed snacks and games. Room transformations are when teachers choose a theme and decorate the room accordingly, as well as gearing learning activities to that theme, as well. Fifth graders recently went on their annual TERN trip to White Sands Beach in order to examine the physical and biological properties of the beach by making observations and gathering data on weather, sand, seawater, and living organisms. Students studied the variation of plants on the beach, dunes, and nearby waters as well as studying their adaptations for survival. Students also went on fun beach-combing scavenger hunts as part of these investigations. The Springs School library is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month this month. Librarian Ms. Comber is featuring several books that celebrate and teach about Hispanic culture and invite everyone to come check out these books! The PTA is preparing for the first Book Fair of the year. It will be held October 21st through 25th and is open during school hours. Anyone interested in volunteering their time to work at the Book Fair and help children pick out books can contact PTA president Ashley Libath at [email protected]. Red Ribbon Week is being recognized this week. Students are participating in “spirit days” each day which include a crazy sock day, hat day, and a wear red day. Red Ribbon Week teaches the importance of making healthy choices in life and saying no to drugs. The week includes an assembly led by East Hampton D.A.R.E. Officer Kim Notel and a poster contest for grades kindergarten through fourth. Eighth graders are fundraising for their overnight trip to Boston in the Spring. They are selling pies and cakes which will be delivered just in time for Thanksgiving. Money raised in this sale helps supplement the cost of the trip. Catalogs and order information can be found on the Springs School website (springsschool.org). |
